Who we are

The Friends of Bute Park's aims are to celebrate, conserve and enhance Bute Park as a place of freedom, recreation and enjoyment for all.

We are a group of people who are enthusiastic about the Park and believe that it is one of the great treasures of the City of Cardiff, providing an open space in the heart of the City and a wealth of historic and wildlife interest.

We want to help keep the Park special and we work closely with the Park management in carrying out conservation and other work.  We are also working to make the public more aware of the rich natural and historic heritage within the Park and we organise guided walks and talks to explore and explain this heritage.
We would welcome more volunteers to join us in these events, just come along.

What we have been doing recently:

Fungi Talk 13th January

Today's talk and walk was a well attended and we were able to learn a lot about the different types of fungi and their relationship to atmospheric conditions.   We then went out on what was a fine afternoon to see examples on trees in the park using hand lenses to examine the various forms that fungi take. Our grateful thanks to Alan Orange from the National Museum.
Litter Pick with the Cardiff Rivers Group 12th January

On Saturday we met up with the Cardiff Rivers Group to clear the rubbish left on the banks following the high water levels in the past few weeks.  When the river is high and flowing fast a great deal of material (plastic bottles and polystyrene packing mainly) is deposited on the banks and, in places, well inland.  An hour or so's hard work saw a significant improvement in the area downstream from the bridge at Blackweir making a real difference - look out for it!  Thanks to the CRG and all whop turned up on a not very pleasant morning.
